BAR FOR BAR – WEDNESDAY 25th SEPTEMBER With Mazbou Q

An exercise in collaborative storytelling, designed to extend our adaptive creativity as rappers. Together, groups must construct “back ’n’ forth” style verses, where each rapper can only rap up to a maximum of four bars before alternating with another.

Suggested song formats:

· Rappers are in dialogue with each other. This could be them debating over an issue, dramatizing an argument or just having an insightful conversation - get creative!

· Rappers collaborate to tell a story or recount an experience. This could be a singular perspective that they take turns in sharing, or each rapper could share differing perspectives of the same event

· Rappers share life lessons, discuss shared identities or simply flex their skillsets.

The main requirement is that there is interactivity between each rapper’s contributions - i.e. piggy backing off each other’s rhyme schemes, mirroring each other's flow patterns and playing off each other’s words, etc. This will be a highly collaborative writing process. We can all rap - but this evening is to break out of our comfort zones and work together to create something outside of the box.

WHAT TO EXPECT

· A Q&A with Mazbou Q, discussing how lyrics are constructed, and stories are told through rap

· Workshops on back ‘n’ forth song formula

· Collaboration with other emerging artists to craft songs and lyrics

· Oversight and input from tutors on your process

· Opportunities to network with other artists and established performers in Aotearoa hip-hop
